Today we went to the Makerspace and the students explored the parts of a lever. They created catapults and got to test them out in the classroom. They were a huge success!
Today the grade 4's had the opportunity to do needle felting to create a landscape they would see in Alberta. They used a barbed needle and wool fibre to create a beautiful piece of art. Needle felting is a unique medium and all of the students were successful with this technique. Take a look at how they turned out. The students also wrote about what makes Alberta unique.
This week the students were exploring Pulleys in the Makerspace. In small groups they used a variety of materials to create pulley systems. Ask your child about what they created.
Remembrance Day is a special tribute to the veterans, active members of the armed services and to those who fought and died while serving our country. World War I ended on the eleventh of November in 1918. Those who were in the war decided that it would be right to remember their friends who died, on the day the fighting stopped. This week the grade fours organized a niceRemembrance Day assembly. The students in room 7 also created nice pictures of Poppies using chalk pastels. They then wrote recipes for Peace to go along with their poppies. Have a look at what they've done.
This week we went on our first field trip to Heritage Park. It was a beautiful day and the students had a lot of fun participating in the two programs based around Science and Social Studies. Check out our pictures from the day.
The first program was called, "Auto Motion." The students worked in small groups to design, build and test their own rubber band-powered vehicles. They had the opportunity to see how different materials, construction methods and ideas can combine for different results. The second program was called, "Across the Sea of Grass." The students took a journey across Canada to a new home on the "sea of grass". They learned about driving in the last spike on the railway, to the crowded, jostling colinist cars, as they discovered the role the railroad played in settling in the the West. They explored the settler's life by visiting a "soddie", and the Burnside Ranch House. The students also had a taste of the farming life by learning how to churn butter and sampling the results! |
